I loved the mods in SC1. You could make some seriously busted ships with them. A VUX with decent thrust and turning is pretty nasty, but a Yehat with a couple dynamo upgrades was just unbeatable.

The good thing about SC1 update's were, they were confined to ONE ship, to the ship that found them.
The update simply worked on any ship.
(Which promoted the use of a specific single ship to explore the map, and get them all stacked on this one ship...)

The updates in Origins are similar, you can stack them. But they disappear once the battle is over.

Making it race-specific could have allowed them to balance better. But they still should have made them unique rather than applying to all. And of course they didn't balance them better. Like, the Doog should have had a firing range increase or a maximum speed increase or something.
