So... ghosts of the precursors theories:
make em' as stupid as possible.

Example:
the precursors made the sa-matra and the ur-quan race as a whole to unite the galaxy against against a common enemy so they could reveal themselves and have a challenging fight cause they were evil the whole time. haha yes

There were only four individual Precursors - Inky, Pinky, Blinky an Clyde. They scoured the galaxy to find a solution to power pellets. In GOTP you try to exist in the quadrant currently being explored by the mighty crew.

It's a horror game. You are in a haunted starship, being haunted by the literal ghosts of the precursors, and have to find your way to the utwig bomb to end it all posthaste.

Oh my god. I started reading your names and my brain interpreted them as:
Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.

You scared me as hell there!

Ugh, I hate the spoiler tags here. I don't really like how they work.
They have advantages when spoilering in-text, but for images I would prefer one which collapses the content of the spoiler into a clickable field.
So, removed image and left only a link to it.

The Precursors never died out, they just devolved themselves to dumb animals so they could keep a watchful eye open for an existential threat that feeds on sentients... somehow.

Hmm...

Come on, take this seriously. Even if we're doing joke theories we want them make atleast SOME sense.

Well, they devolved themselves, and thereby became a kind of cattle that most younger species use as meat delivery animal.

Can't get much dumber theory than that.

but it was an aspect and idea I did like about SCneverexisted3, within the rubbish general idea of the concept of Eternal Ones feeding on sentience

Hidden in devices they left behind.
Biological computers which can self-replicate, but alas their programming went haywire and now these computers destroy planets; mechanical electronic computers, which are disguised as space-ship servicing vehicles, but their programming went haywire and now they form a might-based imperium just to gather more knowledge about their makers; ...

Well, the real ghosts are in the memories of the Slylandro.
Somewhere on Source they find a Slylandro able to remember a bit more of the relevant history chants, whcih gives the player a starting point for the new game. The hint, It came from a shady old memory, a ghost of a memory. The only shadow of knowledge which might lead you somewhere regarding the Precursors....

Well, we'll see how it'll end, because it leads us to the real problem.... Somewhere a Precursor science installation working with expanding consciousness went dead, and every rescue mission there went "dead" too, But then the ships appear, bearing loads of tasty toads. But once they set their legs on a planet, that planet falls off-communication network too.
So, within a very short time the Precursors were gone.
Wait till you find that cuddly little Toadie, which did tell you about their genetic memory, but failed to tell you it knows a lot about the Precursors...
