Channel 44 snippets.

Post by krulle »

As you might know, Dan Gerstein and Fred Ford (main developers of UQM2 / Free Stars) have extended interviews with game developers, about UQM and other stuff.

I intend to collect some interesting pieces here.

MinMax Games (Richard Clifford, Andrew Hume) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caJx787N5-M :
on the topic of "arguing" with fellow developers to pitch ideas, Fred replied 8:35 that in the original UQM development, they had a lot of minor game stuff in the game(for trying stuff out), they deleted before shipping; e.g. they had crew members influencing the performance of the ground troopers depending on the planet's weather/stats; the bility to send your escort ships to different planets in the same solar system....
Sounds a bit like Star Control 3, where some of that got used (colonising the planet, and how good the colony did depended on the races; you could split off escort ships in any system and send them somewhere in-system).
And indeed, the bookkeeping of that took more effort than the fun it brought...

It's often really tough to distinguish what looks good on paper vs. what actually works in practice. Having a level of creative control where you're able to cut content that isn't working well or ends up not making the game more fun or interesting is really important (instead of being forced to commit to having something in-game because it was a bullet point in your publisher pitch or kickstarter goal).

Indeed.
It's good they can go that way.

I remember some games where picking the right crew was an interesting part of the game, but then you were picking individual crew members, not just species balance.

As for sending ships around, it seems like that would have suffered drastically from lacking a mouse. With a mouse, it could be made to be no big deal. It'd also have made having a large fleet of planet landers really important.

Greg Johnson is too busy working to be able to write parts for FS:COI .
(from the development stream)

Anyway: Channel 44 talk with Freehold Games:
At 11:28, they talk about how many different writers they used for the races of UQM; and Fred tells the story about the problems with the last delivery.
At 13:00 Fred tell about the guy who did the Utwig and Ilwrath was late with his delivery, and called him (by phone). The guy said he has delivered, but because nobody opened up, he left an envelop with the floppy disk on the window sill. Right underneath the ledge was a dumpster, and Paul went dumpster diving to retrieve the floppy. But the dumpster had been emptied. But Paul found the floppy stuck to the side....
who dares to put the floppy into his floppy drive????

They are trying to get some of the original writers in again. Although back then none of them were paid, if Fred's memory is right.
They were friends who did this to help them getting the game finally done.

Around 24:00 they talk about fixed angles (UQM) and free angles (modern systems). They even experimented with free ship orientation and fixed angles for aiming.
It turned out during playtesting, that using ships like the Druuge Mauler, which have very long range, against smaller fast ships like the Pkunk Fury, it is easier to land a hit on the Fury if the angles are limited...

OMG... Enthusiast writers and it actually was completed? Inconceivable!

Impressive, huh?

And the conversation was about the last thing entered into the game.
(watching the stream right now, hence the edit after your comment)
