Melee challenges
« on: May 14, 2005, 03:00:25 pm »
RULES
- Let's keep things uncluttered, one or two challenges per person.
- Good old piloting skill should be essential to completing the challenge.
- Challenge should be doable without relying on freak incidents and pure luck (see above).
- Not too complex setups or special rules.
- If you can, use a similar template as below, so the challenge can easily be spotted.

- Posts in this thread is restricted to: Posting challenges. Boasting about having completed a challenge. Flaming me for making the umtenths challenge thread (if that's the case).

---

LICK-MASTER CHALLENGE

Good cyborgs: 1 Arilou skiff, 1 Utwig Jugger, 1 Mycon Podship.
Human control: 1 ZFP Stinger.

Special rules: 2 minute time limit (doable in less than 1 I think).

Notes: If you're a novice player, like me, you might wanna try 3 Stingers. If you're a very new, try 10 (close to point value to enemy fleet). Veteran melee players might not find this challenge very difficult (it might even be doable on Awesome Cyborgs). The Jugger seem to be the toughest opponent, and might require a little luck, unless you're skilled enough to flank it. And yes, the AI doesn't warp or shield when you lick :P

Story: Storyboarded (not finished). Captain NikNak, equipped with a deep space exploration Stinger, finds a precursor artifact. Will he be able to bring it safely back home? It seems everyone are after it!

---

I hope this is the right forum section for this. I eyeballed through a quick forum search but didn't see any similar threads, except a few I didn't want to resurrect.

Edit: Completed my challenge (2 crew left).
Edit: Storyboard wip.

<Mycon Battle Report>

NikNak swept towards the Podship by the gravity of the planet. He engaged the licking laser -- and it missed. He almost tried for another shot while he was in range, but thought better of it as two Mycon energy blasts began tracking him.

He retreated, and recharged his battery for a few seconds.

Lunging in a second time, he caught the Podship with a lick, and followed it by a projectile burst as his acceleration brought him out of licking range. The Podship had 5 crewmen left.

As NikNak headed away the Mycon performed a "Sandwich" maneuver. One blast followed him from behind as a second flew towards the front end of the Stinger.

The speed of the Stinger helped, but NikNak just barely made it away by grav-whipping.

After recharging, he headed in for the final kill. An energy blast was launched as he came closer. He managed to avoid it for now.

'Drifting' with acceleration, he shot a lick to the side of the Podship. At the same moment, the Mycon's own blast hit the Podship itself, since the Stinger was behind the Podship.

NikNak was never quite sure whether it was his weapons or theirs that destroyed them.

<End Report>

I'll write the other reports of the adventures of NikNak as Time permits.

Okay...I've got one here:

NUMERICAL INFERIORITY

Opposing Fleet(Good Cyborg and up): Seven Kohr-Ah
Your Fleet: Two Arilou, two Thraddash, and three Zoq-Fot-Pik

Notes: I've not actually managed to do this yet, so good luck. I know it can be done, but you'll have to get a lot of milage out of each ship for it to work.

Znork pushed his pedal to the metal and just as the last black ship came out from behind the large moon, catching it in a trap of hot plasma from the afterburners.
Yeah! That one is for Mnump he growled and lit another cigarr. He leaned back in his seat and grinned as he watched the debris of the enemy ship dance around in space.

Suddenly his Torch shook and all the ship monitors died. Znork bashed the consoles furiously, to no avail.

As he looked out the left vision slit he could see a large spinning disc eating through the hull, and as he looked out the rear view window he could see a fiery ring of hot blue plasma ejected from a most unexpected seventh black ship.

---

What?

There. THERE! See it?

TikTok wiggled his head. No... he said.

Debris! Lots of it! Curved blue pieces! Sharp black prieces! Angular grey pieces!

FitFap sighed. MAYBE if you stopped looking at the Frungy game and directed your attention...
He didn't have time to finish the sentence.

A heavily damaged but most threatening black ship overhot them with a roar.

GAAaah! TikTok! You're using the sensory display to watch Frungy on! Now we're in big trouble!

TikTok fumbled with the buttons. The tongue shot out, annihilating the massive black ship. A massive fireworks display filled the screen.

Ooops.

What do you mean 'oops' FitFap exclamated. Maybe they were friendly!

Right... TikTok turned the Frungy back on.

Honour and Glory

Da Opposition:
2 Ur-Quan Kzer-Za Dreadnoughts, 1 Koh-Ah Marauder

Your Boyz:
4 Shofixti Scouts

Hard, but not impossible, I reckon.
4 Scouts aint enough to glory your way through.
Tried and tested, doable with some skill.

And satisfying as hell, mind you.

Mind the Gap

Them:
Six Chmmr Avatars, Four Pkunk Furies
All awesome cyborgs, random picks

You:
Three Androsynth Guardians

Likely you'll be fighting six Avatars and six Furies.
You'll need to average better than one Guardian
per four kills.  The Avatars pose a danger with a
close start, and the Furies with a distant one.

Head-to-head assaults are out of the question.
This setup is to train a pilot in the use of distance
and attrition tactics with a Guardian.  You must choose
carefully how to use your energy and capitalize on
the computer's mistakes.  You get an A+ for only using
one ship, a B for two ships, and a C- for three ships.

You may want to get something to eat/drink.
This challenge may take more than an hour to
complete on a successful attempt.

I enjoyed this one and actually thought it was harder to do on Weak cyborg. The Ur-Quan are easy to kill by killing their fighters and use some good piloting. I actually got the Kor-ha last with all of my shofixti and just detonated the glory device on with three of them.

Conversion to the DarkSide

Opponent (Comp Awesome):  7 Avatars, 4 Marauders, 3 Dreadnoughts
The Admirals Fleet: 1 Nemesis, 1 Jugger, 1 Yehat and 1 Earthling Cruiser

The Story: A band of rogue Chmmr have become irritated with the human philosophy of universal peace. The rogue squadron abandons reason and logic and turn to emotion to drive them. They discover that the only way to find themselves is through an alliance with the Ur-Quan. You hear of this over the hyperwave broadcaster as you are having a potluck with the Orz and Utwig at the Yehat Queens palace. You and those at the potluck are asked to intercept the rogue squad which is being escorted by several Dreadnoughts and Marauders.

Good Luck!

Note: I did this the first time, but I must admit that I had a very good run and that I had a good random sequence by the computer.

Sedodes, Mind the Gap seems quite impossible. I enjoyed trying, but clearly you must have a great deal of skill with the Androsynth.

The Crippled Hierarchy.

Ever wonder why the poor Hierarchy got their butts kicked after the destruction of the Sa-Matra? Try using the Old Hierarchy team, minus Androsynth and Spathi:

Dreadnaught, Podship, Intruder, Avenger, Drone

against the New Alliance of Free Stars.

Avatar, Terminator, Nemesis, Jugger, Fury, Eluder, Mauler (?), Skiff, Blade, Penetrator, Cruiser, Torch, Stinger, Scout. (can't remember the default team)

Its not that bad, but you'd better hope you draw something decent against the Avatar.....

The Ilwrath were wiped out, so no Avengers. The Mycon took a pretty good beating as well, so if you have two of every other, you should have just one Podship.

I don't think the Mauler ought to be in the NAFS team. Other than that, it looks like a good challenge.

Sedodes, Mind the Gap seems quite impossible. I enjoyed trying, but clearly you must have a great deal of skill with the Androsynth.

not impossible. Skilled androsynth pilot can destroy all cyborg Avatars without any losses of crew. You just throw bubbles and get away with blazer form. The problem is the Fury's and their endless ressurections. Each time they manage to do some damage. So, this contest is the question of luck (how much times Pkunks will be ressurected)

PS sorry for my poor english

Actually, it's a lesson in using your bubbles (battery/distance), Blazer form (mobility/battery), and recovering from "random" events like asteroids and Pkunk resurrections.

It's meant to demonstrate how to use your weapons and abilities in a defensive way, as well as how distance can be used to your advantage in different ways against different opponents.

On average you'll fight six Furies.  Sometimes more, sometimes less.  Even so, you should be able to take out over a dozen Furies with only three Guardians -- so as long as each one isn't resurrecting a ton of times Mind the Gap should prove to be a challenge, but by no means dependent on all but the most extreme cases of luck.

If you're having problems with Furies then you're launching too many bubbles too fast.  Because the Cyborg tries to avoid damage and the bubbles use their Chaos Tracking, you can very easily get a Fury dancing away from a lowly pair of bubbles while you crawl off to create some distance.  The Fury can't avoid ALL of the bubbles due to its momentum and you'll find yourself scoring the occasional hit now and then.

Another tactic vs. the furies is to toss out bubbles now and then and Blazer it when it crosses in front of you.  A miss will cost your entire battery, however.

A skilled Guardian pilot can complete this challenge with one ship, losing crew only due to a nearby Pkunk resurrection or because of asteroid interference.  Because the Awesome Cyborg isn't willing to do a suicide run if it can help it, you can exploit that.
